Feels like Spring
What a pretty day it was for a meeting of the Syracuse Quilt Guild. Our color of the month was yellow and Olivia was our brightest star in the wearing yellow category.
Olivia wearing bright yellow and showing off the yellow in her pretty block for the Christmas tree festival. |
Everyone was happy to have Yvonne back and glad to see her looking so good.
Nancy opened the meeting and got us all right down to business (not monkey business either) but still lots of fun. She had brochures from the Quilt Walk Festival in Panguitch June 11-14, 2014. Sounds like lots of fun with Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Co. but Nancy said tickets for her session were already gone. Nancy is going and said it would be fun to meet up with others there.
National Quilt Day Update -We had a very successful participation in the NQD event at the Legacy Village in Layton. Nancy thanked all the volunteers and everyone donating items for the sale. We did very well and sold nearly all the items we brought. We had several guests inquire about our group and may generate some new members.
Nancy looking forward to going to Panguitch in June |
What a fun retreat Nancy has planned for the guild. She passed out a flyer with information for everyone. There will be demo's provided by the Quilt Shoppe, free time for sewing and for the really competitive, a Jelly Roll Race. We will be ordering lunch in for Kneaders so the whole day can be devoted to sewing. Hope to see everyone there.
HMQS News - Diane shared news from HMQS which will be May 8-10 at the Southtowne Expo Center. Lots of information on their website at the link above. Let Diane know if you would like to volunteer to help out. They need help with hanging quilts on Wednesday and scribes for the judges.
Birthdays - We celebrated March and April birthdays this month with Chris, Becky and Mardell. We were sorry that Carol and Susan weren't there to celebrate their birthdays with us.
Mardell showed off this beautiful dragon quilt she made for her grandson. Great Job |
What a pretty quilt Chris and yes, the points all look great! |
Becky showed off this pretty patriotic quilt she made and quilted last summer. |
Our own Fons and Porter (Jeannette and Belinda) with Tips and Hints
Belinda and Jeannette shared some great tips for sewing and quilting. Not sure I caught all of them but here goes.........
Glad Press and Wrap wrapped around cardboard or fiberboard makes a nice sticky surface to hold your patches in place (think Design Board) while putting your blocks together. It also works great to wrap around your thread spools to keep those wandering threads under control.
Use Tearaway Stabilizer on your quilt tops to draw a quilting pattern on, do your quilting and then tear away the stabilizer. The wash away stuff works good too. You can find it in the embroidery department.
Organize your stencils by hanging them on a hanger with safety pins or paper clips.
Sport Ball Pumps are great for blowing lint out of your sewing machine.
Magnetic Tool Holder from Harbor Freight is great at holding your scissors and other metal tools in place
Batting Corsage - Batting scrunched and pinned to your shirt makes a great thread catcher or pin or needle holder letting you catch those threads before they are all over you.

Dresden Plate ruler used to make this cute carrot |
A laundry bag made from a pillowcase from Mother Huddle Blog. |
