April Windstorms and Snow can't stop the Syracuse Quilters from Meeting
On a day that saw the weather go from 70 degrees to 34 degrees and wind gusts hitting 80 mph in Utah, the Syracuse Quilt Guild held a great meeting with lots of wonderful ideas, guests and new members.
Maggie's guest, Julie Tidwell, talked to us about the "Days for Girls
http://wwwwdaysforgirls.org organization that makes feminine hygiene kits for girls in third world countries. These kits make a huge difference in the girls lives and their ability to stay in school. Our group agreed this would be a good project and Jeanette will work on setting something up. Please look at the link above for more information on this worthwhile cause.

Utah Quilt Guild updates
Sandra, our State Representative, (and newest member of SQG) brought us up to date on the latest happenings at the state level. She gave us an update on the success of National Quilt Day and asked us to give her some feedback on location and activities for nest year. Our own group was very successful with our fundraising at this year's NQD. We sold all of the microwave hotpad bowls and many of the other items we offered for sale along with our baskets and mini quilts.
Sandra told us about the scholarship available for "New Quilters" for this year's Quilt Fest. More information is available on the Utah State Quilt Guild blog. She also gave additional information on the Fat Quarter Challenge. .The quilts must be no larger than 40x40 and use the green fabric, and include an embellished leaf The quilts will be auctioned with the proceeds going to Intermountain Health Heart Research.
Quilt Labels
Suzanne shared some interesting historical information about quilts during the civil war. It seems that women often made their husbands and sons quilts to use as bedrolls and included a label on the quilt which was sometimes used to identify the remains of the fallen soldiers. So quilters - Label those quilts.
Block of the Month
Nancy demonstrated the block for this month. The pattern will be sent out by email.
Tips and Hints
Jeanette shared some wonderful tips and hints with the guild this month along with some great ideas from the guild members..
- Use pool noodles to wrap your quilt tops on to keep them from creasing
- A mug tree holds scissors
- Pony tail fuzzy wraps to keep your bobbins neat
- Eye glass cases to hold your small rotary cutters or other supplies
- Ice cube trays to hold bobbins
- Small plastic boxes hold sewing supplies
- Don't put your quilts in black plastic bags or they may wind up at the D.I.
