October Quilt Guild

News, Lessons Learned all in a Fun Meeting

October's meeting started out with a great update from Marilyn on Quilt Fest including announcing that our own Nancy was the winner of the Viking Saphire Sewing Machine, as well as second place for her pretty Witches Broom.

Quilt Fest, Sew Bewitching, was very successful this year and lots of exciting things are already being planned for next year.  Next year's theme will be "Alice in Quilt Land" with a Mad Hatter's hat challenge and a quilt challenge to include 1 yard of Alice's favorite blue fabric.  Utah Quilt Guild is also issuing a "Lower Your IQ (Incomplete Quilts) challenge.  Forms and information are avaiable on-line at http:utahquiltguild.org

Next up the group shared things they learned at Quilt Fest or other ideas and tips to share.

Suzanne shared a reverse applique and 3-D flowers

Kathy showed some table runners from panels she plans
on gifting

machine her husband made with working handle

Marlena shared the story of a swap challenge in her former guild
where they brought fabric to cut and then swapped strips to
make into a quilt.  Lovely

Jennifer shared her experience in assisting judging quilts at quilt fest and gave us some wonderful tips for entering your quilts and what judges are looking for.

  • Looking for basic techniques, corners and seams match, points aren't cut off, etc.
  • Borders are mitered
  • Bindings are mitered and stitched down with full, hard bindings
  • Wow factor
  • Quilting should be evenly spaced and not puffy
  • Quilt should be CLEAN, no pet hair or tobacco odor
