Syracuse Utah Quilt Guild Meeting

April 14, 2026

It is so exciting to see our Guild quilt come together that
we are making. It includes the some of the history of Syracuse
and the 250 year celebration of our country this year.
Many talented people worked on designing
and sewing the blocks.
All Quilt Guild Members names will be embroidered below the flags.
It came about from a request from the Syracuse City Museum for a
commemorative quilt.
Marie headed up the task. Pam will be quilting the quilt.
Lori will make a name tag for the back.

Lori has made name tags for those who don't have one.
Lori passed out pattern weights for those having birthdays

Our sincere condolences to Teri and Susan for the loss of their loved ones.

Next month is our Quilt Guild Birthday celebration and Bingo.
Bring items you may no longer need or want that someone else might like for prizes.

Our Block of the Month color for May will be pink. No holiday fabric and please use white background.  These blocks will be made into comfort quilts.

Jennifer gave a presentation on preparing a quilt
for a Longarm quilter to quilt.
For pricing ask before as it depends on cost of thread, does it need ironing
before quilting, will it be edge to edge quilting or custom quilted, will
the binding be done by the longarm quilter and if so will it be machine
or hand binding?

The quilt top needs to be squared and flat.
She said use a thicker batting if not flat to hide imperfections.
Batting should not be too thin (not flannel) or thick.
She suggested using starch on the fabric, blocks, sashing and borders.

The back and batting should be 5" larger all around the quilt top.
Take off selvedges, piece backing horizontal, square up backing if the backing
is pieced, add applique, charms, and buttons after the quilting is done.

Add fusible webbing to T-shirt quilts, thin Minky like fabric is better.
Spray Minky or use cold water and then put in a low dryer to remove wrinkles.
Using a steamer or iron on the back side may also remove wrinkles.

Here is a sample of Jennifer's beautiful quilting.

Ami gave a demonstration on how use a large pool noodle
to make a quilt sandwich.
This is used when quilting on a sit down machine.
Pin backing to the pool noodle,
roll and spray layers with 505 basting spray.
Then additionally pin baste before quilting.
For larger quilts use 2 pool noodles and join with PVC pipe.
Spray using a shower curtain to protect surfaces.

Amy, our Gadget Girl, this month shared with us many tools
to make our quilting easier.

Amy uses this double sided nail polish holder for her thread and bobbins.
She showed some Cutterpillar items including a flip and fold self healing cutting mat,
a clamp light for quilting rulers, a flex light to add light to the sewing machine
and for hand sewing projects.
She likes the Missouri Star green rulers and a Hot Hem Ruler made out of felt
from Madame Sew and Clover.

Amy uses Creative Grids Stripology rulers to cut strips.
She hangs her quilts in the bath tub to spray them with starch,
she uses washers for pattern weights, a face shaver for a seam ripper,
and a dual duty seam ripper stiletto combination.

She likes fork pins, curved scissors for cutting threads, and she buys long tweezers and magnet bowls from Harbor Freight.
